leap into summer with Goh Ballet {giveaway}

If you looked up "moves with grace and finesse" in the dictionary of Opposites, you would find a picture of me, hunched over, silently howling because I just stubbed my whole body on a piece of furniture that has been in the same place for 5 years. Every day I forget my dimensions, my whereabouts in this world, and how close and far I am to people and sharp corners. I am a bumbler. That's how I navigate this Earth. Muttered "OUCH'S" and smacked shinbones.

I am constantly encouraging Stella to watch where she's going, be mindful of her body while she flails around on the playground or navigates the sidewalk while a flood of tourists drown our neighbourhood. I want her to move through the world with more confidence and less bruises than me. I want to spend less money on band-aids. To help her escape my genetic clutches, this Spring I enrolled her into a dance class, despite her moaned protests and dramatic flops onto her bed.

Super surprising news: she loved it and I was right. (*Finds a spot in her baby book to write this down and rub her nose in it forever.*)

When I heard Goh Ballet was performing "The Four Seasons & More" next weekend (June 2 & 3, 2017) at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre, my fancy-lady heart leapt. I love pretending we are more sophisticated than we are and taking her to see and touch and eat and experience new and exotic things. Since 6/7 nights of the week we eat cheese and crackers for dinner in front of Netflix, I want her to understand there are amazing people out in the city living their lives creatively. I want her to see that hard work and discipline can pay off in soaring ways. I want her to stand up straight and believe in herself and every carefully laid footprint she chooses to leave. Plopping her in front of a troupe of trained dancers and musicians, coming together to make something whole and beautiful, just might spark something even more magical in her sweet and juicy little heart and head.

I want her to stretch and reach for all the stars. (Just be careful baby, because stars are sharp and we don't have any band-aids left.)

More About God Ballet's The Four Seasons
Goh Ballet is pleased to present its annual end-of-year showcase performance, "The Four Seasons & More" in collaboration with Vancouver Academy of Music's Concertante String Orchestra June 2 and 3 at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. both evenings.

Act 1 features the world premiere "Quintessence" a ballet that immerses viewers in the essence of human emotion: joy, sorrow, bliss, despair and hope. Brought to the stage by Brazilian-born Canadian choreographer Monica Proenca, the ballet is set to music by Edvard Grieg's "Holberg Variations."

Act 2 brings Antonio Vivaldi's storied score to life with dancers performing in each of the four movements: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, personifying the beauty of the music with energy and transcending the audience into the world of our annual landscapes with an added component of visual art featuring renowned works by The Group of Seven.

"An opportunity to bring artists together and work on a production that not only builds on artistic excellence but is also innovative in pushing boundaries is something that is incredibly meaningful," Goh Ballet Director Chan Hon Goh said. "The dancers, musicians and visual artists are able to share their artistic interpretations through this collaboration. I am really proud to showcase this remarkable evening's program."

This year's performance is also the first of what both VAM and Goh hope is the beginning of more creative collaborations.

Tickets are $48 and can be purchased online.
