So it's the end of June which means the end of another school year and you should have a kid because there is no better way to helplessly watch the months slip off a calendar and feel your bones and gasp like a fish unceremoniously flipped out of water. HOW IS SHE ALMOST SEVEN, DEAR READER?
She lost so many teeth and the rounded edges of her cheeks but gained confidence and tiny golden monkey bars muscles and weird wisdom this year. Once they start school they have so many influencers whispering around their heads and you can chant ancient wishes around a campfire and hope that your parenting has given them a thick skin and a strong eye for bullshit, but really, their success comes down to this: mindful and observant teachers who understand how hard social-emotional development is (especially for kids with no siblings), a loyal best friend who has your kid's back always, and a school who is proud and community-minded and offers wonderful and inclusive opportunities to every ripe little head that walks through the front door.
This girl of mine is now off for a long summer where she has promised me she will watch some French movies on Netflix (to keep her second language strong) and stay up too late and eat too much summer fruit like her Mom so we can frantically take turns in the bathroom. Six and a half.
Oh, this girl.
In between crying jags this month, as the song Cat's Cradle exploded behind my eyes, I kept busy watching...
The new season of Orange is the New Black
I wasn't sure if the format of this new season was working for me but when it came to an end I was, as always, gasping for more and dying to know what's next. Please give Danielle Brooks (Taystee) all the awards. Every year she somehow gets better.
GLOW Season One
One episode in and this is neon throwback body slamming GREAT fun! Men's wrestling is always on in our living room so this feels like the perfect accompaniment. I don't love Marc Maron's very famous podcast but he is PERFECTLY cast as the sleazy manager. I can't wait to follow along with these ladies adventures in the ring.
Last weekend Stella and I were lucky enough to attend a local Netflix party where they showcased a new interactive feature that she LOVED.
Remember the "Choose Your Own Adventures" stories back before all this beautiful technology was but a dream? Imagine if you could do that with your favourite animated show? You can right now with Puss in Books: Trapped In An Epic Tale (featuring Puss In Boots from Shrek) and coming July 14, Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile.
Um, this was our first introduction to Buddy and this stop-motion animation and humour made us BOTH extra happy and I frankly do not watch children's television ever. I can't wait for us to argue over what he should do next come July 14th. It's probably good form to let her choose, right?
Why I'm racing through this column: I NEED to watch Okja right now. Look at this trailer and tell me I'm wrong.
I'm going to cry at the end forever, aren't I?
As a member of Netflix Canada's #streamteam I will be giving you the straight goods on what I'm watching each month in exchange for a yearly membership. It's a match made in heaven, really.
